The Newburgh Locks and Dam is located 776.1 miles from Pittsburgh, PA, and is 16 miles upstream from Evansville, IN. On April 24, 1962, it was authorized as a replacement for the already existing locks and dams 46 and 47. In June of 1966, construction on the locks began, and by December 1969, it was finished. In June of 1970, construction on the dam began, and lasted roughly five years, ending in 1975.
The Newburgh Locks and Dam are approximately 2,275.5 feet in length, and consists of two locks and nine gates. The height of the gates is 32 feet, and the width of each gate is 110 feet. The main lock is 110' x 1200', and the auxiliary lock is 110' x 600'. Each gate on the locks and dam is reported as movable, despite the reported weight as being slightly under 800,000 pounds.
In 2008 a reported 73.5 million tons of commodities were shipped through the locks, with a combined value of $15.9 million.
