Diabetes Treatment Advances Print E-mail
6-2-2008
According to the American Diabetes Association, 21 million people in the United States have diabetes, but nearly a third of them don’t know it. Sixty thousand Tri-State residents are diagnosed with the disease, and one in four Hoosiers has a blood sugar level that signals a pre-diabetes condition. Any advances in diabetes treatment are big news here. That’s why information about how the incretin (INN-crea-tin) system contributes to the advancement of Type II diabetes is causing such a buzz at area health care conferences these days.

WNIN’s Steve Burger talked with Deaconess Hospital Diabetes Center Program Director Janet Oakley about the “Incretin Effect” as it’s known, and what changes in therapy are being used to treat Type II diabetes.
