WNIN-FM has invested in adding HD radio to our digital transmitter. HD radio allows WNIN to add up to three content streams that can be heard with any HD radio receiver. HD radio provides CD quality sound on the receivers that are now appearing in many new vehicles and are sold at many electronics retailers.
Through a partnership with iBiquity, the licensing organization for HD radio, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, in September 2010 WNIN added conditional access technology to our Radio Reading Service signal on 88.3-3. WNIN is the only public media outlet in the country to have this capability, which allows us to broadcast to specific receivers listed in a computer database. WNIN is working closely with the Evansville Association for the Blind on this demonstration project for conditional access HD radio.
Currently, the FCC authorized HD signal for WNIN is approximately ten percent of our FM signal coverage area, which means the HD radio signal is limited to the following counties in the WNIN listening area: Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson, Warrick, Spencer, Daviess and Henderson, Kentucky.
